rich in history
The Castle Garden
It’s believed a garden was first laid here in the 1600s by the Forsters, Bamburgh Castle’s first private owners. The Garden has been part of Bamburgh Castle Estate ever since.
The Garden was once tended by Job Horsley, the grandfather of Victorian heroine Grace Darling. Part of the Garden was gifted by Bamburgh Castle Estate to construct a building containing Grace’s rescue boat. This became the RNLI Grace Darling Museum in 1938, located next to Bamburgh Walled Garden.

a modern space
To be enjoyed by all
Over 400 years after its beginnings, a seed was growing in Bamburgh Castle Estate owner Francis Watson-Armstrong’s imagination to breathe a new flush of life into the derelict, overgrown Walled Gardens and open them up to be a thriving, accessible space for people to enjoy.
Bamburgh Walled Garden is a place for everyone. Fully accessible for disabled visitors, their families and carers. The Gardens include Bamburgh’s new Changing Places Toilet.
